On August 29, 2020, Glendive Public Schools was notified that a Student at Lincoln tested positive for COVID-19. According to the Dawson County Health Department, some of the Lincoln staff and students were in contact with the student during the period of possible exposure. However, because of how we have structured the classes/schedules to mitigate possible exposure, only a small amount of the students and staff came in contact with the student. The student was at school on 8/26/20. Contact tracing has been completed and those individuals who were considered close contacts have been identified and notified. Glendive Public Schools will continue to take safety precautions to make sure all students and staff are as safe as possible. If any staff or students are at risk of exposure, the Dawson County Health Department will be in contact with that person to determine a safe and appropriate course of action. According to the Dawson County Health Department, the District's students were not in contact with the teacher during the period of possible exposure. However, the teacher last worked in person-to-person contact with fellow staff on August 21st, five days prior to the teacher’s diagnosis. We are so excited to have students in our buildings again. Below is some information that might help you out for this first week. Face coverings: Please remember that students/staff will be required to wear face coverings on school property at all times except for the following circumstances: where social distancing can be maintained, at recess if the groups/cohorts are less than 50 students, consuming food and drink, and while engaging in physical activity. This applies even if we drop below 4 active cases in Dawson County. Our plans were in place before Glendive had enough cases for the Governor's order to go into effect based on guidance from our Health Department and the CDC recommendations. Online: If you have opted out of Face-to-Face instruction you should be getting information from each school on when your student will start. If you still haven't seen anything, please call the school that your child goes to for more information. Offsite: With this being the first week of school, we will not be doing the offsite days. We want to make sure that we have everything set up. Next week, we will be starting the offsite days with all students. Your student's teachers will be sending work home or in their online platform for the students to complete. Recess: Each school is set up a little differently with how recess will work this year. Each school is trying to set up times for students to be outside without their masks. The general rule is that students can be outside without their masks if they are grouped with fewer than 50 students and they are outside for less than 15 minutes. There will be times where this is not possible (i.e. mornings when all students come to school on the playground). Please know we will continue to try and create opportunities for students to be able to take off their face coverings. Please help us by encouraging your students to follow these procedures so that we can continue to try and offer these opportunities and keep our schools healthy. Food Service: This week we will be offering Breakfast and Lunch for onsite students only. Next week, we will start offering the opportunity for students to also request Breakfast and Lunch on their offsite days. Please watch out for more information coming out this week about how the offsite process will work along with the process for students that are online.
The following is guidance and protocols developed by the Dawson County Health Department to help mitigate the risk of COVID-19 spread at Glendive Public Schools. Please check out the following link. We will also be sending out a Frequently Asked Questions sheet developed by the Health Department in the next couple of days. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gBmrDjKhix4AThfhBR41dIhbb0uYmphHKze8Hqc4YX4/edit?usp=sharing
RE: GPS will NOT be charging the Tech Fee for 20-21 school year Thank you for your patience as we travel to new waters for Glendive Public Schools. Recently it was announced that parents were going to need to pay a $30 rental fee for the Chromebooks and Ipads that the students will be receiving this year. After last spring, we heard from many parents and staff members that the online learning was difficult for many reasons. Some of those reasons had to do with not having the proper devices, not being able to keep their student on task, not being able to control what their student was doing, etc. We heard loud and clear and were able to purchase Chromebooks for all students grades 3-12 and IPads for students grades PK-2. Not only were we able to get a device for every student, but we also wanted to make sure that they meet all student privacy requirements and applicable technology laws. In addition, we wanted to make sure that we were able to control all aspects of the device at school or at home for their offsite days. We have received many emails and have talked to many parents over the last week about the rental fee. We will NOT be charging this fee this year as we agree that it was announced too late. If you have already paid the fee, the school will be contacting you to give your money back. We understand that grants were used to purchase this equipment. The school district will need to find a way to help make this sustainable moving forward. There will still be a device checkout sheet that will need to be signed so parents are aware of the process for checking out the device. If you have any questions about this, please contact your student’s building administrator. We are really looking forward to having students start back in the schools tomorrow. Again, thank you for your patience and grace throughout this difficult time.
Info on Transportation: With the A/B Hybrid Schedule, Glendive Public Schools will have busing available for all students that need it! Busing will be available starting the first day of school. Just a reminder that if you would like to opt your child out of face-to-face instruction for the start of the 2020-2021 school year, please complete the form below. Today is the last day to do it. Opt out Form: https://forms.gle/ZTnrrTsWPoPh7rmS9 Thanks!
Kindergarten registration is now open for the 2020-2021 school year. In order to be eligible for kindergarten, your child must be 5 by September 10, 2020. If your child fits this criteria, please click on the following link to register electronically. This is our first time registering online, but we are giving it a go! https://mtdecloud3.infinitecampus.org/campus/OLRLoginKiosk/glendive
Kindergarten Registration Information: Please watch out for information about how to register your Kindergarten Student by Tuesday, August 11th. We are working on a way to register your student online.
GPS is working on getting the A and B student groups finalized for each school. If your child’s last name starts with an A-K they will be in the A Group that will attend onsite Monday and Wednesday of each week. If your child’s last name starts with an L-Z they will be in the B Group that attends onsite Tuesday and Thursday. We know issues may arise with this split because of things like families with different last names, childcare, work schedules, etc. If this is the case for your child/family, please take the following survey with as much detail as possible. We will do our absolute best to accommodate everyone’s request but will also have to make sure the groups are evenly distributed to allow for social distancing and an optimal learning environment. Priority will be given to make sure that children in the same household will stay on the same schedule. Class Lists will not be released until this information has been collected, reviewed, and staff able to make adjustments. This survey is due at the end of the day on August 10th. PLEASE DO NOT MOVE FORWARD TAKING THIS SURVEY IF YOUR ASSIGNED SCHEDULE WORKS FOR YOUR FAMILY. Survey Link: https://forms.gle/iifUymSqU1BaQXV59
Glendive Public Schools is requesting that any parent or guardian that would like to opt their child out of face-to-face instruction for the start of the 2020-2021 school year, complete the form that can be found at the link below. Parents will be allowed to choose this option through Tuesday, August 11, 2020. Each school needs time to prepare and plan for staffing needs for both online and face-to-face instruction. Completing this opt out agreement is necessary and very important. If you have any questions about this, please contact the building administrator of the school your child will be attending. The Glendive Unified School Board has determined that students who opt out of face-to-face instruction will still be allowed to participate in sports and activities. Please note that this is only for people that are registered with Glendive Public Schools. All rules, procedures, and eligibility requirements must be followed to participate. Opt out Form: https://forms.gle/ZTnrrTsWPoPh7rmS9
We would like to take a minute to briefly explain the difference between online learning and offsite learning to hopefully clear up any confusion between the two. Online Learning This would only take place in the event that the government shuts down the school, if students/teachers have been quarantined, or if a student has chosen to be an on-line student. In these cases, we would have students use their provided device and connect with their teachers remotely. This would include but would not be limited to online independent assignments, Google Meet/Zoom meetings, interactive lessons, and would have teacher directed lessons. Offsite Learning (Restricted or Hybrid A/B model) This would be supplemental work for the hybrid format in order to meet requirements. During the hybrid schedule, this supplemental learning would take place in conjunction with classroom instruction. Students who attend school would be given additional “at home” activities to be completed outside the classroom along with a provided device. Examples of this offsite learning could be: reading, summarizing an article, math practice, spelling practice, little readers, projects, reading a novel, writing practice, review problems, journaling, review questions, etc. This could also include activities to promote social/emotional development such as: family dinner time, reading to a sibling, taking a walk, riding a bike, hiking in the park, swimming, preparing a meal together, etc. Our goal at GPS is to provide an excellent education to our students while keeping the health of our students and staff at the forefront.
On August 3, 2020, the board convened a meeting to discuss the framework for re-opening schools. The school administration team was tasked by the board to develop and present a re-opening framework. Board discussion and public comment was heard. After public comment and discussion, the board motioned and approved the reopening framework and to start the 2020-2021 school year with the A/B Hybrid/Blended model for grades 3 through 12 by a vote of 4 to 2. The board tasked the administration to develop criteria for when each level of the framework would be implemented. The board directed the administration team and GEA to work together to develop a K through 2 reopening plan to be presented to the board. Direction to develop a commitment form for families to choose the online option for students was given. This will be developed and sent out to families in the GPS district. There was discussion whether students that enroll in the online option would be able to participate in extracurricular activities. This was tabled and no determination was made. The board will address this issue at the next board meeting. Discussion on pushing back the start date of school occurred with no final resolution. The board recessed the special board meeting and will reconvene after further information has been gathered. The next regular scheduled board meeting is scheduled for August 10, 2020 at 7:00 PM in the DCHS auditorium. GPS Reopening Guidance (Options):https://5il.co/j3o7
Just a reminder about our board meeting tonight. Agenda: https://5il.co/iyo6 If you are interested in talking during the public comment section of the meeting, you will be required to sign in at the beginning of the meeting. We are trying to get it set up to live-stream tonight's meeting on Facebook. If we are able to live-stream this meeting, you will not be able to participate in the public comment section of the meeting while viewing online. Please note that the Dawson County Health Department has alerted everyone that Dawson County now has 6 active COVID-19 cases. They have initiated Governor Bullock’s mandatory mask directive that will require everyone to wear a face covering at the meeting. Because this meeting will most likely have more than 50 people attending, it had to be approved by the Health Department. Please follow all safety protocols that will be in place at the meeting. Dawson County Health Department Post: Face masks are now required in Dawson County per the Governor’s directive. For further information on the directive, please visit the Dawson County Health Department’s website at www.dawsoncountymontana.org/daparrtments/publichealth

GPS Families and Staff, Last night, the Glendive Unified School Board voted to support the blended/hybrid model of reopening schools. This model, which was proposed as one of the three options by GPS administration, is a combination of on campus and online instruction. The primary goal is to have kids in our buildings as much as possible. We are scheduling a meeting with key stakeholders to work out the details of that blended/hybrid model taking into consideration CDC, state, and local health department safety guidelines, to ensure that our schools operate in a healthy and safe manner. This plan will be presented to the board on Wednesday, July 29th at 4:00 p.m. For more information on what was presented to the board, please click on the following link. Within the next week, GPS will be distributing a survey to gain student, staff, parent, and community input in regards to school resuming in the fall. The well-being of our students, staff, and community, as well as “Excellence in Education”, are of the utmost importance to us. Our intent is to build a plan that could be used in the event of any emergency, potential long term school closure, or the need to comply with any CDC/State/Local requirements. The current options while being compliant with Federal/State mandates are: Restricted (fully on-campus while adhering to CDC guidelines), Completely Online, and Partial (any combination of the previous two). This survey will help us gather stakeholder insight on how you feel we should proceed. GPS will share the survey via school email (students and staff), GPS website & social media pages (parents and community), and for those without online access, paper copies will be available in the district business office. We anticipate this survey taking approximately 5 minutes or less to complete. Your input is not only appreciated but is essential. Thank you ahead of time for your participation!

From Superintendent Schreibeis: The GPS Board of Trustees met Wednesday night and unanimously approved the recommendation to continue online remote learning for the remainder of this school year. This is an intentional decision that puts the safety of our students and staff first and foremost. While our school campuses are closed, we have an obligation to ensure our students continue to receive quality education services through the remainder of the school year, with a focus on the delivery of instruction through distance learning and providing school meals to our students. If you currently have questions or concerns about your students’ progress, please take the time to contact your child’s teacher(s). We recognize the closure of school campuses through the end of the school year brings about many questions. Please be watching for upcoming communication from your child’s principal and teacher(s) on how these last few weeks of the school year will be used to get assignments and work turned in, return textbooks and other school-owned items, and provide additional support that may be needed. More information will be coming out in the upcoming days. I also want to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of school staff to serve our students and families with continuity of learning, nutrition, and social/emotional supports during these unprecedented circumstances. We truly have an amazing staff, awesome students, and supportive community! #GPSCommunity #WeAreInThisTogether

Just a reminder for everyone to continue to do the following things so that you can protect your student and everyone else. We have to all be in this together to #KillTheNorovirus. 1. Wash your student's clothes, jackets, backpacks, etc. 2. Clean your house with bleach or another product that takes care of the Norovirus (remember, disinfectants don't work on the Norovirus). 3. Make sure everyone is washing their hands frequently with soap and water (hand sanitizers do not work on the Norovirus). 4. Keep students home 48 hours after they no longer have symptoms. We know that it is really difficult to do some of these, especially number 4. We appreciate everyone's continued effort with keeping our schools and community safe. Have a great weekend! Go #68! #GPSCommunity

Did You Know: The symptoms of Norovirus: Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, possible: fever, headache, body aches. You can spread the Norovirus after you get better. The Norovirus is still being produced in your body after you get over your symptoms. Even once you feel better, you should still stay home at least 48 hours after. This is vital if we are ever going to get this virus out of our community. #KillTheNoroVirus #GPSCommunity
Did You Know: Soap and Water can wash Norovirus away, but it takes really hot water to kill it. So please wash your hands with soap often and wash your clothes with Very Hot Water. #KillTheNoroVirus #GPSCommunity
Did You Know: Hand Sanitizers do not kill the Norovirus. The CDC recommends using bleach to kill it, including chlorine bleach or hydrogen peroxide. #KillTheNoroVirus #GPSCommunity
Parents, please use this weekend to wash all your kids clothing, bedding, etc. I know it is a lot of work, but when the Norovirus can last 3 weeks on surfaces or clothing, we need to be diligent with killing this virus. #KillTheNorovirus #GPSCommunity
Hello, this is Stephen Schreibeis, the Superintendent at Glendive Public Schools. As I am sure you have heard, our community is battling the norovirus among other sicknesses. Because of this, GPS is taking steps to keep our students and staff safe. School will be canceled on Monday, January 27th. This unprecedented step has been taken to help give our students and staff time to get better, to thoroughly sanitize our buildings, and to try to stay ahead of it moving forward. We want to make sure that we are able to kill the virus in our schools so that we can continue to keep our school environment as safe as possible. Please understand that the only way that this virus will go away in our community is if every individual takes the steps seriously that the Health Department has sent out to everyone. Please review the message that the Health Department has sent out on their Facebook Page and website if you have not already. Glendive Public Schools has also posted this information on our app, websites, and Facebook Pages. We know that the virus will keep cycling through our community and schools if people do not follow these guidelines. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our community safe and healthy. Thank you for your understanding.

The Dawson County Health Department is requesting the assistance of community members in doing their due diligence in preventing the spread of Norovirus circulating in our area. Just because you have had Norovirus once, it does not provide you with immunity. Within three weeks, you could get it again. Norovirus symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Preventative measures include: Hand Hygiene – wash with soap and water NOT hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer does not destroy the norovirus. Disinfect - contaminated surfaces including laundry with chlorine bleach. Launder – contaminated bedding and laundry should be washed with hot water, detergent and bleach Protect yourself by wearing gloves when handling soiled items. Food Prep – do not prepare food for at least 48 to 72 hours after symptoms end. Stay home – Do not return to work or school or childcare for at least 48 hours after symptoms resolve. If symptoms persist or worsen, follow up with your healthcare provider. Update on WMS gym floor: While trying to assess and resolve the initial problem which was the source of the buckled gym floor, it was determined that the quantity of leaking pipes was greater than originally believed. Due to the condition of the pipes and, to ensure the restoration is properly completed, we have been working with; our insurance company, two restoration companies, two plumbers, and two flooring companies. Upon assessing the extent of the damage, additional leaks were discovered around the gym area as well as the identification yesterday (12/5) of mold in the boy’s restroom (foyer of the gym). Precautions were immediately taken to quarantine the gym foyer and restroom area until a mitigation specialist can further assess the situation. Our goal is to immediately and properly rectify these issues so as to resume normal activities at WMS as soon as possible. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mark Goyette (WMS Principal) at 377-3288 or Stephen Schreibeis (GPS Superintendent) at 377-5339.

Bad news again regarding the floor at Washington Middle School. We had some valves that we estimate are 70 years old, leak under the gym floor. When we turned on the boilers here a few weeks ago, the water then started to evaporate and rise into the wood once again buckling the floor. We have had plumbers in to remove the valves and fix the leaks, a mitigation/restoration company in to dry things out and western sports floors in to evaluate the damage to the floor. We were hopeful that the mitigation was going to return the floor buckling to normal, but unfortunately there wasn't any change in the conditions. The end result is a gym we can not use for any contests until repairs are made. All girls basketball home games will be played at DCHS unless notified otherwise. The WMS Wrestling Mixer scheduled for Nov 21st will be cancelled as DCHS is not available that day. We apologize to everyone for this inconvenience as we work through this issue. Buses will not be running tomorrow morning because of the snow. As with any situation, the safety of our students is the utmost importance. If a bus happened to get stuck, we do not want to have students standing outside waiting at their bus stops in the cold temperatures. Buses will be running tomorrow afternoon, as we feel the buses will be able to maneuver better by then. As with any situation like this, if you feel it is not safe to get your kids to school, please call the school and let them know. We feel it is important for parents to have a choice and make the final decision for their student. Please know that these decisions are not made lightly as we know these situations can be an extreme inconvenience for many families. Thank you for your understanding in this difficult matter. Again, buses will not be running tomorrow morning but will be running in the afternoon. We will also be continuing our early release schedule in each school with parent-teacher conferences from 2:00 - 8:00 pm. Thank you!

I just wanted to inform you that there was gas smelled in the office at Washington Middle School. The building was evacuated to ensure that everyone was safe. Both MDU and the Fire Department were called. There was no gas detected anywhere when investigated. I want to thank the building administration and staff for taking immediate action and keeping our student's safety their number one priority. As is standard protocol, we will take precautions like this when we think that our students could be at risk. We will continue to try and inform everyone as soon as we are able in these types of situations. Thank you!
We just want to inform you that we have found a sewage line break at Washington Middle School under the south part of the building. This line is an original sewage line that has been in place since that part of the building was constructed in the 1930’s. The break is not affecting the entire building, just the south part. Due to the break, we can not use the restrooms, sinks or drains on any of the floors on that part of the building. We have relocated multiple classes because of the smell to those rooms. The Glendive Fire Department has assured us that there is no safety risk for our students/staff to continue our regular operations. We DO have functioning bathrooms and sinks in other parts of our building and the kitchen was not affected by this leak. Lastly, we have had to cancel our pre-K classes for the remainder of the week until this issue is resolved or we can set up another part of our building to accommodate their needs. We will be continuing to work through this issue and hope to have everything back to normal operation as soon as possible. We will continue to try and keep everyone informed about these types of situations. Thank you!

GPS Communication: We have recently heard that some people are not getting our messages from the district/schools. We are constantly working to improve in this area, but we need your help! Please, Please, Please, if you haven't downloaded our app, please do so now (the app isn't just for parents). This is the way that we are going to send out the majority of important information coming from the district or individual schools. Please just go to your app store and search "Glendive Public Schools." Download the app and check your notification settings (Menu - Settings). Check out the video below for a tutorial. We are also able to use text to get information out. Please make sure your cell phone is on file at your child's school to get these messages by text. We won't always send out a text, but if your cell phone is in our system, you will get it when we send it out. Also, we have the ability to make calls to every phone. Please know that these will be used for various reasons. It is not always an emergency situation that this will be used. Please make sure that any phone you want to be called on is recorded at your child's school. Please know that if an all-call goes out, it will also be sent out on our app, our website, as a text message, on Facebook, and Twitter. We will be sending it on various platforms so that we make sure that you get the message. As always, we appreciate your support and patience as we continue to improve our efforts to keep you informed with what is going on in the schools. Thank you to the Glendive Police Department, Dawson County Sherriff's Department, and all who contribute to making Glendive a safe and welcoming community. Facebook Post: https://goo.gl/9csHGM
I just wanted to inform you that there was a soft lockdown today at Lincoln Elementary School. The soft lockdown was initiated for the respect of other students in the building. In a soft lockdown, the teachers continue to teach in their classrooms as we need the hallways for various reasons. Law Enforcement and Ambulance was both here at the school, but there was not a risk to any student. I know with everything going on in the world everyone is heightened to these types of situations. I know that sometimes word spreads before we are able to get information out to the parents. We will continue to try and inform everyone as soon as we are able in these types of situations. Thank you! Stephen Schreibeis GPS Superintendent
