🌱 Advanced Biology Students Bring Miniature Ecosystems to Life 🌿
Mr. Pagawisan’s Advanced Biology class has successfully concluded the construction phase of their final project: building self-sustaining biospheres! 🌍✨
Tasked with translating ecological concepts into a tangible model, students collaboratively planned and designed closed-system terrariums. 🪴 The hands-on building process required them to meticulously layer clay pebbles for drainage 🪨, pack nutrient-rich soil 🟤, and carefully arrange vibrant plant life. 🌿 To ensure a healthy and balanced miniature ecosystem, the young scientists also introduced essential decomposers, such as earthworms 🪱, to recycle nutrients once the glass containers were sealed. 🫙
With the physical construction complete, the students are now beginning a rigorous seven-day observation log. 📋🔬 They will actively monitor the water cycle 💧, plant growth 🌱, and overall ecological balance within their closed habitats, witnessing the principles of biology unfold in real-time. 📈🧬

🔬 Hands-On Learning in Action! 🐸⭐🪱
Mr. Pagawisan’s Sophomore Biology students have been hard at work rolling up their sleeves (and snapping on their gloves!) for some incredible hands-on science this week!
Our budding biologists stepped into the lab to dissect frogs, earthworms, and starfish. This immersive experience allows students to step away from the textbooks and explore complex internal structures up close, comparing the unique biological systems and adaptations of amphibians, annelids, and echinoderms.
We are incredibly proud of the respect, focus, and scientific curiosity these sophomores demonstrated during their dissections. It takes a lot of precision and teamwork to navigate these labs, and they did a fantastic job! Way to go, future scientists! 🧬🔬

Congratulations to Wyatt, Gresyn, and Koby! They will be piloting our first year of Early Start Program/College Pathways with Dawson Community College. They will begin their pathway in welding and should receive their welding certificate from DCC by the time they graduate next May from DCHS. They will have the opportunity to continue this pathway after graduation with the potential to earn an Associate’s degree. We would like to thank BreAnn Miller for working with us to provide this opportunity to our students. We hope to continue building more pathways for our students in the future to prepare them for the workforce after high school.
The Glendive Zonta Club and Dawson County High School Z-Club proudly recognized outstanding young women for their leadership and service during a special gathering on Sunday, May 3, at the Glendive Public Library.
Guest speakers from Glendive’s Domestic Violence Advocacy group shared valuable resources on conflict de-escalation, healthy relationships, and the vital support they provide within our community.
Z-Club and Zonta members, along with family and friends, also came together to assemble care bags for domestic violence survivors—turning inspiration into meaningful action through service.

💚🌱 Mental Health Matters at Dawson FFA 🌱💚
As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, Dawson FFA wants our members, families, and community to know that it’s okay to ask for help and support.
Agriculture comes with unique stresses and challenges, and sometimes the people struggling the most are the ones who appear the strongest. Parents, caregivers, friends, teachers, and advisors are often the first to notice when something feels different. A simple conversation, check-in, or act of kindness can make a big difference.
FFA is more than contests and jackets — it’s about building leadership, connection, and a community that supports one another through both successes and struggles. 💙💛
If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out. You are not alone.

Big Upgrades for Our Science Department! 🔬🌟
Huge shoutout and thank you to the Montana Masonic Foundation for awarding our school a $2500 grant, making it possible to purchase brand-new microscopes for our Science Area! 🔬✨ These are a massive upgrade from our old equipment, finally replacing cloudy views and broken lens objectives with crystal-clear magnification and an awesome camera accessory that allows students to record pictures and videos of their slides directly to their devices. 📱🦠 In the attached photos, you can see Mr. JC Pagawisan proudly accepting the grant check from MMF representatives, along with his Advanced Biology students eagerly unboxing and testing out the new gear in the lab. 📦👩🔬👨🔬 We are so incredibly grateful for this generous community support that brings hands-on, modern science right to our students' fingertips! 🙌🧬

DCHS Events and Activities May 4-9

Scott Molander-President of Dickinson State University, Brandi Ollerman-owner of the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Dickinson, ND AND a Red Devil alumni, and Dylan Rose-current Pharmacy student, spoke to DCHS students in the Chemistry and Anatomy and Physiology classes to present information on a new pre-pharmacy pathway being offered at DSU starting in the Fall of 2026.
DSU will partner with NDSU to offer a pre-pharm pathway that will allow students to complete coursework locally before transitioning to NDSU's PharmD program in an effort to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure in the MonDak region.

Stepping into the future of science! 🧬🌍
Mr. Pagawisan’s Advanced Biology, General Biology, and Earth Science classes had an incredible opportunity to dive headfirst into Augmented Reality! A massive thank you to the Montana Army National Guard's STEM/HOP Program for bringing the amazing zSpace technology right to our classroom.
Special shoutout to SFC Shaun Spencer and SFC Tanner Steinke for leading such an engaging and interactive activity. Our students were completely immersed!
Using the AR glasses and interactive styluses, students were able to pull 3D models right off the screen. They virtually dissected and examined the anatomy of various animals—from frogs, pigeons, and spiders, to snakes and even a T-Rex! 🦖 Our Earth Science students also got a hands-on, 3D look at the Water Cycle and Plate Tectonics.
It is amazing to see complex concepts come to life and watch the students light up as they explore science in a whole new dimension.

Poppin’ Into Biology with Mr. Pagawisan’s Class! 🧬🫧
Today, our Advanced Biology students explored Survivorship Curves in the most hands-on way possible—using bubbles to model life expectancy!
They tested three reproductive strategies in action:
Type I: Most live long lives, with deaths increasing in old age (like humans!) 👵👴
Type II: Equal chance of survival at any age (hello, birds and lizards!) 🐍
Type III: Many die young, but the survivors go the distance (just like fish and insects!) 🐟🐜
Through every bubble blown and burst, students discovered how nature designs survival strategies to help species thrive. Science has never been so interactive (or so fun)!
